Preparing To Pack? 5 Steps To Declutter Before Your Move
When you’re getting ready to pack up your belongings and move into a new home, it can be hard to find the time to declutter. However, doing so can make the moving process much easier and set you up for organizational success in your new home. Here, we’ll take a look at five steps to get the decluttering process started right.
1. Get Centered
Take a few minutes to imagine the type of space you want to create in your new home. If you want a clean, comforting home, the last thing you need is clutter. So get in the mentality that you only want to bring things to your new home that you’ll enjoy—not things that will zap your energy.
2. Don’t Wait
You have a lot to do when you’re moving, especially if you’re still trying to find the perfect new home. Think about decluttering as a meditative way of preparing your mind and belongings for your new space. There’s no need to attack all of your things at once. Setting a goal of going through one area per day (one closet, one drawer, one storage space) can be a manageable way to get your clutter under control.
3. Hold Off On Immersing Yourself In Nostalgia
It can be tempting to sit and reminisce on old memories when you’re going through old things. Set aside a box for nostalgic items to keep things moving, and go through it after you’ve moved. Remember, you have your memories—you don’t need every ticket stub and souvenir to remember all of the fun and memorable things you’ve done with loved ones.
4. Have Kids? Ask Them To Help.
You might be surprised to see how well your kids respond to the idea of donating some of their toys and clothes. Of course, it will take a little bit more time than going through things yourself, but instilling a clutter-free mentality in young ones can go a long way in keeping your house in the calm, relaxing condition that you want. Talk with your kids about how donating their toys and clothes can help people in need, and talk to them about the options (donating to a church, school, shelter, etc.).
5. Don’t Skip The Tough Stuff
Most of us have a drawer or closet that serves as a catch-all for things that don’t quite have a place. Moving these items into your new house can be tempting without going through them. So instead, take your time and sort through each item in your messy areas. If you haven’t used an item in a year or more, there’s a good chance you can donate it.
